Beginning Quilting 101

In this class we will complete a wall or crib size quilt using machine piecing and machine quilting techniques. There will be "homework" so that the project can be completed in 5 lessons. The staff at Material Things Quilt Shop is available to assist you in the selection of the tools and fabric needed for this class. Class will meet 5 sessions.

Free Motion Machine Quilting

This class covers the basics of free motion quilting. Basting, machine set up and sewing area, batting, design choices, marking, meandering (stippling)and both marked and unmarked designs are covered. Most students feel fairly relaxed and comfortable with free motion work after completion of this class. Level: Intermediate to advanced: Not for beginners. Students need to have a command of their machine operation and use.

Hand Applique

Beginner to Intermediate Level (for students with minimal hand sewing experience and those who want to review basic applique and learn new techniques. In this class you will learn to make templates, two methods of placing pieces on background without marking, making stems, and the tricks of making invisible hand applique through needle-turn and freezer paper methods.

Hand Quilting

For the absolute beginner, intermediate quilter, or student who wants to learn traditional hand quilting techniques and the use of a hoop or frame. The following topics will be covered: pin and thread basting, use of stencils (teacher will provide them), comparison of hoops and frames and types of equipment, rocking and stab stitches, and the quilter's knot.

Log Cabin Buffet

Join Norene for a fun fabric buffet, and learn to make the half square log cabin block, which looks great if it's really scrappy. This basic block is really addictive and makes great use of stash fabrics and those ugly and oddball fabrics that you can't use anywhere else. By the end of class most students will have completed enough blocks for the center of a lap quilt.

Plowed Furrows Quilt

Virtually no one can resist squeezing these soft, plump rows of fabric surrounded by flannel. Make a small version to pamper your kitty, or make a lap-size to cuddle under on these cold evenings. This quilt-as-you-go method starts off with easy strip-piecing. Combine all those rich, vibrant fabrics you've been dying to use (no pun intended).

Quilting 102

Using the techniques learned in Quilting 101, we will add the shape of the half-square triangle to assemble an assortment of nine-patch blocks that will make this quilt personally yours. The size of the quilt is also your option. There will be "homework" so that the project can be completed in 5 lessons. The staff at Material Things will be available to assist you in the selection of the tools and fabric needed for this class. Note: First class will be only 2 hours. You will not need your sewing machine in the first class.

Wrapped Bowl Class

Wrap, wind, and sew fabric strips into fantastic containers! Start with a plate shape to learn the technique. Then experiment with four basic container styles to create round, oval, square, and other shapes. Create purses, baskets, and bowls in an endless variety of sizes, shapes, and colors.
